LED Sign Installation Guide

Quick answer: plug the supplied USB cable into any 5V USB port, use the inline switch to turn the sign on, and either stand it on a shelf or fix it to the wall with removable adhesive strips. Hide the cable with adhesive clips or a stick-on raceway.

Your sign, up and glowing in about five minutes

Every Michael's 3D World LED sign is 3D printed to order and fitted with low-power LEDs. There's no wiring, no batteries and no electrician: the sign runs from a standard USB port. This guide covers the two ways people display them — standing on a shelf or desk, and mounted on a wall — plus the part most guides skip: what to do with the cable.

What you need

  • Your LED sign
  • The USB cable supplied with it (about 1.2 m, with an inline on/off switch)
  • Any 5V USB power source: a phone charger, laptop, TV USB port, powered hub, power strip or power bank

No batteries are required. If you don't have a spare charger, any standard 5V USB phone charger will do.

Option 1: shelf or desk (the easiest setup)

Most of our signs are designed to stand upright on a flat surface, which is why they're so popular for shelves, desks, gaming setups and display cabinets.

  1. Pick the spot. Put the sign where you'll see it face-on. Keep it 2–3 cm away from the wall so the glow spills onto the wall behind it — it makes the sign look bigger and brighter.
  2. Plug it in. Connect the USB cable to the sign, then to your charger, TV or power bank. The connector only fits one way, so don't force it.
  3. Switch it on. Use the inline switch on the cable. If nothing happens, try another USB port or charger before assuming the sign is faulty.
  4. Tidy the cable. Run it along the back edge of the shelf and down the nearest leg or wall. A couple of adhesive clips is usually all it takes.

Option 2: wall mounting

Signs are light because they're printed in PLA, so you don't need heavy-duty hardware. Choose the method that suits your wall:

  • Removable adhesive strips (such as Command strips) — best for renters and plasterboard. Clean the wall first, press firmly for the full recommended time, and use enough strips for the sign's weight.
  • Small screws and wall plugs — for a permanent install. Use fixings suited to your wall type, and check for wiring and pipes before drilling.
  • A small shelf or picture ledge — the zero-damage option if you'd rather not fix anything to the wall.

A few rules that save a lot of grief: don't hang the sign by its cable, leave the inline switch within reach, and use a tape measure and level so it's straight before you commit.

Hiding the cable (the bit that makes it look built-in)

The cable is the only thing that gives an LED sign away. These five options cover almost every setup, from a bedside table to a full wall display.

1. Run it behind the furniture

Drop the cable behind a bookcase, cabinet or desk and bring it back to a floor-level outlet. This is free and invisible, and it works for most shelf displays.

2. Use adhesive cable clips

Stick-on clips hold the cable tight against skirting boards, shelf edges and wall corners. Space them every 20–30 cm and match the clip colour to the surface.

3. Add a cable raceway

A stick-on trunking or raceway hides the cable completely and can be painted to match the wall. It's the cleanest look for a cable that has to run across an open wall.

4. Use a longer USB cable or extension

A passive USB extension lead up to about 3 m is fine for these low-power signs and opens up far more placement options — especially if the nearest outlet is across the room. Avoid running extensions under rugs, behind heaters or anywhere they can be pinched.

5. Match the cable to the wall

A white cable against a white wall is almost invisible. Our cables are chosen to suit each design, but if you have a preference, mention it when you order and we'll match it where we can.

Power options compared

  • Phone charger — the simplest option and the one we recommend for a permanent setup.
  • TV USB port — the sign switches on and off with the TV, which suits media rooms.
  • Power bank — portable power for markets, events and shelves with no nearby outlet.
  • Smart plug or USB power strip — put the sign on a schedule or control it with your voice assistant.

Safety and care

  • Indoor use only. The signs are not weatherproof.
  • Keep away from water, sinks and steam. Unplug before cleaning.
  • The LEDs run cool, but PLA softens in high heat — avoid direct sun, heaters and hot cars.
  • Dust with a dry microfibre cloth. Don't use solvents or abrasive cleaners on the printed face.
  • Don't daisy-chain multiple signs from one low-power USB port; use a powered hub or power strip instead.

Troubleshooting

  • No light: check the inline switch, then try another USB port or charger.
  • Flickering: usually a loose connector or an underpowered port. Try a wall charger rather than a laptop or hub.
  • Dim: some laptop and TV ports output less power. A 5V 1A (or higher) phone charger will brighten it.
  • Only part of the sign lit: stop using it and contact us — we'll sort out a replacement.
